What do Lilies smell like?

Do you like the smell of Lilies? Not everyone does, the scent provokes a strong reaction, love or hate you can’t ignore it.

Their scent changes and evolves as buds open and bloom. Starting gently with a soft white floral tinged with green deepening to a heady, some would say cloying, intense and powerful, thick, waxy floral. The petals unfurl and the stamens lift their pollen laden filament wafting a rich, spicy, honeyed fragrance laced with clove.

My ongoing experiment to create a Fantasy Dahlia while not a lily per se, is heavily influenced by this complex scent, it has a white floral accord, with hints of clove and green snapped stem notes.

LYS MEDITERRANEE

by Edouard Fléchier for Frederick Malle is a beautiful rendition of this glorious smell.
